Six individuals travelled to Ocean Springs, MS, October 20 - 27, 2007, to continue helping with rebuilding homes that were destroyed or badly damaged by hurricane Katrina. The team was based at Camp Victor. A team of 15 sponsored by Faith Lutheran Church spent a week there in March 2006. The recovery is on its way but there is still much to do.
The team spent most of the week helping a couple in Moss Point continue the work of renovating their house. They painted, hung doors, installed carpet and tile, and installed a water heater and bathroom fixtures. Terry, the owner, worked along with them and is most appreciative of the team's help. The team did a bit of driving along the Gulf Coast. The debris has been removed, people are using the beach again and there has been a tremendous amount of rebuilding. But drive inland a few blocks and one sees that a lot of work remains. The people there are so happy that the volunteers are still coming there to help them out. "We would not have survived without the volunteers" was heard over and over. People don't seem so "shell shocked", the stores have merchandise and in general it looks like life is returning to the Gulf. The bridge between Ocean Springs and Biloxi that collapsed in the storm will reopen Nov. 1st 2007. Amazing that it could be rebuilt so quickly. The team returned home a bit tired, but feeling good about the work they did and would have done more if the materials were available. Please continue to pray for and give generously to the restoration efforts in the Gulf Coast. |
